The good thing about my 4 minute commute to work is that there are a few billboards on the way that tend to distract and entertain me from the traffic ahead. The bad thing about my 4 minute commute is that there are just too many billboards on my way to work. I can live with it. I take it as partly inspiration and partly as daily reminder of what not to do. This new billboard for visitbritain.com went up just a couple of days ago and it certainly caught my eye. This is an example of a witty, simple and straightforward campaign that I feel is nicely executed. Albeit, the design is not mindblowing or unique, it does utilize some tried and true design and witty elements -
- The bold font in all caps (which my best guess is Din or Flama.)
- The usage of the color red emphasizing the word Great.
- The "insert whatever here is GREAT" approach - makes it flexible and the campaign becomes easily scalable.
- The smaller size, smaller case font for the website does not overwhelm, and gently suggests that you visit.
I like the white frame that ties in with the white type.
The background countryside photo stays in the background until you take a closer look.
Good, smart design is when the viewer is guided through a certain hierarchy to get the message across in a succinct manner. I think the chaps behind this campaign achieve it quite nicely here.
So next time I am driving down to my office and I am stuck in traffic, I will look upon this billboard and I will keep calm and carry on.
The photos below have been added after my initial journal entry. Whenever I see a different rendition I will document it and add it below.
