A week ago I came across this European graphic design firm that did some exceptional branding work. Simply stunning stuff. I bookmarked their site to return to, when I had some more time.
Last weekend I had some time and I perused their site and came across one brand identity they designed. It was eerily familiar with the logo of B&B ITALIA - a high end furniture company I did a lot of work for, here in Los Angeles.
No way! I mean did they really do this? This is a graphic design firm which I love 90% of their work and have utmost respect for. I know we all get inspired by each other, but a design firm of this caliber should know better. You see the logo they developed is well done as is, but for someone like me, who is familiar with both logos, it makes me question all their other work as well. I am sure not a lot of people know about the existence of B&B Italia, since it is a very high end product, but is it not the designer's responsibility to present work to a client that is distinctively different to avoid rantings like this, by designers like me? Look, there is no doubt this firm does superb work but sometimes ethics come into play, and I for one know, that I would never present a client a design that I knew was so similar to something done by someone else.
Imagine when the B&R client makes enough money to buy a B&B sofa and sees their own "original" logo on the sofa? I mean to the untrained eye...well you know what I mean.
